total eclipse of the heart

icymi: we traveled to the line of totality to see the total solar eclipse last monday! and as you can see, logan took some incredible photos.

we flew to the midwest and met up with logan’s dad to drive down to missouri to set up his telescope and experience the total solar eclipse. we ended up in steeleville, illinois where totality lasted three minutes and twenty-five seconds. after driving all morning, we were pulled over on a gravel road and set up within a few minutes into the eclipse starting. logan and his dad went to a similar location in 2017, so they just had to work through the rust and get back into the swing of it. logan was so excited to be in a location with a longer totality because the first time he took photos, he didn’t have the opportunity to actually look up and witness it in the moment. i didn’t go with them back in 2017 and am so glad that i decided to tag along for this one. honestly, the experience was indescribable. you know what’s going to happen around you, but actually experiencing was unlike anything i could have imagined. as the sun set in the middle of the day, the temperature dropped, the crickets were chirping, and car headlights switched on. getting the chance to take off my eclipse glasses and look up at the sky during totality was unreal. i definitely understood why logan was so passionate about getting back for this one and i encourage everybody to experience one in their lifetime if you have the chance.

there are total solar eclipses every year, but the next one to cross north america will be in august 2045.

the wonderful and talented esther vuong (@flourishillustrations) edited together some of logan’s photos into the banners you see here on the blog. if you don’t already, run to hit her follow button! she’s truly so talented - and you should definitely go and support her art.

honorable mention to this disposable camera photo of logan and i during the annular solar eclipse on our first anniversary (10/14/23) in epcot while celebrating with all of our closest friends.
